Newfoundland Backcountry Skiing

Newfoundland and Labrador offers some of the best backcountry skiing, snowboarding, and snowkiting east of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Weather you are a beginner skier looking for some introductory off-piste action or a seasoned pro looking for some steep and deep powder, Newfoundland and Labrador has something for everyone.

Some of you have written into the Martin Hanzalek blog wondering how it is possible for a backcountry skier to ski uphill. Maybe you have only skied or snowboarded in a resort setting and are wondering what makes traditional downhill ski gear different from apline ski touring and telemark equipment. This short video clip of me skiing in the Tableland Mountains in Gros Morne National Park should help answer some of your questions

  1. Newfoundland and Labrador has some of the most interesting backcountry skiing and snowboarding in Atlantic Canada. We did a Backcountry ski tour with Martin Hanzalek into the Tableland Mountains in Gros Morne National Park and really enjoyed the experience. Hanzalek took us to the Southwest Gultch Cabin and we had a chance to ski the alpine terrain overlooking Trout River. If you are looking for a fantastic experience skiing in eastern Canada, Newfoundland offers everything you are looking for.

  2. Hey,
I was looking to email you in lieu posting this publicly, but I couldn’t find the address on the site. . .
anyways, I just did my first weekend of alpine touring, ever, in the pyrenees and I fell in love with it. I have never dh skied before this past weekend ( long time and fairly competent snowboarder), but I am now keen on getting involved in this sport. I never knew that we had the conditions, nor geography, to really do this in my home of NL (sad to admit, but it is true).

How accessible is this sport in Newfoundland? I know it is a west coast activity, but I am past the point of just being interested and am somewhat in love with it.

    Thanks for your time.
